Calling all Cinderellas: looking for a March Madness contestant – not seeded first or second – that can surprise some people, bust some brackets and become the sweetheart of the Big Ball.
The March Madness brackets are set and fans are frantically filling out their predictions. Before you put everything down in pen, have a look at our five favorite teams to make a deeper-than-expected run in the tournament and become this year’s Cinderella story:
Florida State Seminoles
East Region If we’re following the Cinderella blueprint from last year, the Florida State Seminoles are the pattern
Virginia Commonwealth Rams
Last year’s surprise Final Four entrant could be ready for some more exploits this year. Head coach Shaka Smart was tempted with lucrative offers from bigger programs but instead stayed in Richmond, and has once again brought his team to the dance.
Heading into the Tournament, the Wolverines might be overlooked a little bit considering they took a 22-point loss from Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament and dropped down to a four seed.
Kansas State Wildcats
All of the attention in the Big 12 is focused on Missouri, their Big 12 tournament win, their departure to the SEC and their snubbing of a top seed. But another Big 12 team coming off a good season could make some noise at the Big Dance.
New Mexico Lobos
If you haven’t met Lobos forward Drew Gordon, you might get to know him better in the coming weeks. When he’s on (17 double-doubles on the season), the Lobos are one tough team to beat. Just ask 18th-ranked San Diego State, who saw him take control with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the Mountain West Championship Game en route to the upset.
